What's Up Snoody Cap?

I’m feeling a little fiber craft schizophrenia right now. I wanted to get back into the swing of knitting again after the whole I’m-avoiding-seaming-the-shoulders thing with the Chiton pullover (which has been going on for about a month), but there’s something more alluring about crochet right now. I’m still a beginner, and I have to say making a crochet mistake is much less painful than making a knitting mistake. Loop falls off the hook? No problem. Stitch falls off the needle? Suddenly you have the potential for a number of unintended dropped stitches below it. It’s fixable, but what a pain.

Snood 2.0

Speaking of crochet mistakes …  I took my first snood apart (because it was hideous) and crocheted another one without a pattern. I used a diamond mesh design from Crocheting School: A Complete Course. I kind of winged the shaping, and I think it came out pretty nice. I just need to get a narrower band of elastic (half inch was way too wide) and sew it in. The next step will be to figure out how the heck to wear this thing. It looks so easy in the photos, but wasn’t quite so easy to fasten to my head of heavy, thick, long hair. Practice makes perfect, I suppose.

While I’m talking about crochet, I made an interesting little discovery this weekend—kind of crochet related, kind of office supply related. I have this great crochet book that I find totally helpful called A to Z of Crochet. It’s a smallish soft cover book that’s a real pain in the ass to keep open when I’m trying to follow instructions (I also have this problem with soft cover knitting books and cook books). So, I wondered to myself if I just couldn’t take it to an office supply store and have them cut the binding off and spiral bind it. I thought for sure the sales guy would think I was off my rocker, but when he didn’t look at me like I had another head growing out of my neck I figured that people must already do this all the time. Why hadn’t I thought of it sooner?! It cost less than $5 to do and was ready in under 30 minutes. I want to bring in every cook book I own and do the same. I’m sure they’ll all run at the sight of me coming into the store with an armful of books.

And finally … after finishing up the snood, I immediately began working on another crochet project—the Fit to be Tied clutch in Debbie Stoller’s Happy Hooker book (another one to spiral bind).  I’m almost done with it and will post a photo later this week. I’m hoping to get it lined and finished up before going to my fiance's friend's wedding this weekend. I think it will make a super cute accessory.
