I went on another yarn bender this week. The yarn sale emails are just too enticing. I got a 10% off coupon from yarncountry.com for purchasing the Manos Del Uruguary Serena yarn for the Chiton pullover, which I started this week. I got a “we’re changing owners” email from The Yarn Co. offering a 25% discount on all yarn. I just had to snatch up some sale yarn. And for some reason (perhaps influenced by Cecily Glowik MacDonald's patterns) I decided to try Quince & Co. yarn for the Blue Sky Alpaca “Knot Sleeve Blouse” top. Unfortunately that yarn wasn’t on sale, but fortunately I didn’t need to buy a lot of it. I also made a trip out to Loopy Yarns in Chicago (I live in the suburbs about 40 miles away, so it really was a “trip”) where I snapped up some yarn for a couple of summer projects. And seriously, if it wasn’t for the high shipping prices, I’d probably buy a Webs daily deal on Facebook more than just every once in a while.
Speaking of daily deals … I gave in and bought three skeins of Araucania Itata solid in lavender. It was as if the yarn gods were doing a purple intervention because I received an email this morning letting me know that lavender was out of stock. I decided to sub it for a really nice shade of orange, which will make it the third straight orange project I’ve worked on. Now I just have to make sure not to get stuck on orange.
I’m off to Denver next week to visit a friend, and I already have two knitting stores on my list of “Places to See” (thanks to knitmap.com)—Showers of Flowers and the Lamb Shoppe. Showers of Flowers had some mixed reviews on KnitMap. Most reviews praised the wide selection of yarn, but also gave an emphatic thumbs down to the customer service when it comes to bringing children in the store. Now, I don’t have any children, so I can totally sympathize with a store owner who feels uncomfortable having sticky kids running around grabbing and “re-organizing” things. My mother never would have tolerated my running around in a store grabbing at things. Of course, not being a mother myself, I’ll admit that I can’t pretend to know all the stuff that moms have to put up with. But seriously, if my mother could make me respect and obey her without using physical force or the “time-out” approach (which I don’t even think existed in the 70s), then other mothers should be able to find a way to effectively discipline their children too. My mother was a mother and not a friend. She was stern but loving, and because of all of that I had respect for her as an authoritative figure in my life. She was (and still is) someone I looked up to, not next to.
Okay, enough of my “children need more discipline” rant. I’m personally looking forward to visiting Showers of Flowers because it was the first online store that I ever placed a yarn order. So, I guess it’s a bit nostalgic for me. I always look forward to visiting an LYS when I’m traveling. I don’t buy a lot of yarn—maybe just a few skeins—but I like to knit something up that reminds me of a trip I took. I’m currently wearing my San Antonio scarf; my boyfriend wears his San Francisco scarf; and I have a Boston scarf that’s been in the works for too long now. It’s nice to look down and relive those memories.
