Unfriending Facebook "Friends" is Okay

I'm back from what I'll refer to as my wedding planning hiatus. Anyone who has planned a large wedding knows the amount of planning that goes into it. Every. Little. Detail. In the process, I gained a husband and two more cats, lost 20 pounds, and temporarily disconnected myself from blogging and knitting. It was like knitting radio silence for nearly nine months. But I'm back and so is my knitting (and unfortunately 5 pounds)!

After the wedding, I started to look through my Facebook "friends" and decided it was time to do a little clean-up. For some people, Facebook is all about the numbers and accumulating as many "friends" as possible. Who cares if you haven't talked to your best friend from kindergarten since she was your best friend in kindergarten and now you're nearly 40?  I've always been selective with who I've friended or accepted as friends on Facebook. They are truly people that I want to connect with and keep up with, and I've declined several "friend" requests over the years from people who I suspected were just number padders.

The one thing that I haven't done much over the years is go through and do a little clean-up. I set up my account pre-husband, which meant I had some exes on there. There weren't a lot, but I figured that there was really no need for me to keep up with them and vice versa. So, I decided to unfriend them. My first thought was that they wouldn't even care. It's been years after all, and they've moved on with their lives just as I have with mine.

Imagine my surprise when I received a Facebook email from an unfriended ex who claimed he was "looking for me" and realized that I unfriended him. He congratulated me on my new life and wished me well. I have to admit that I felt bad and a little creeped out at the same time. Bad, because he was actually a really nice guy, it just didn't work out for us, and my decision to unfriend him wasn't malicious. But then a little creeped out because a guy I dated nearly four years ago for only about three months, still wanted to keep up with my life. Oh well, he'll get over it.

In knitting news ... Stitches Midwest is coming up this weekend and I'm taking two classes, one of which is with Lily Chin. So excited! Since I was on a little bit of a knitting break, I knew I'd have to get the needles moving again to get my hands geared up for the weekend. Two weeks ago I started working on the Sunny Baby Blanket designed by Lucie Sinkler for my soon-to-be first nephew. I hope to have it completed in the next couple of days. It's a really great and simple design. I know my new sister-in-law is going to love it!
