A little about me ... I'm in my mid-thirties, I live in the suburbs of Chicago, I have two cats, a 2008 Harley Davidson and more yarn than should be allowed in one house. I'm in a steady relationship, no kids and I share my house with the aforementioned cats - Buster and Rocky. Professionally, I'm a writer, but that title may sound a little more exciting than my actual work some days.
I've been knitting since 2004, and first got started during some downtime in between jobs. I've always been open to learning new things and this actually stuck (unlike the flute I played for all of six weeks in 7th grade). I didn't pick up the needles because of some family tradition or to alleviate stress, instead I was sitting like a lazy lump on my couch one unemployed morning watching the Today show and they were featuring a segment on knitting. I can't recall if Debbie Stoller (author of the Stitch N Bitch books) was on the show or if they were just talking about her book, but once I saw her cool patterns I was totally hooked (crochet pun not intended).
Prior to that t.v. segment, I'd always just thought of knitting as something old ladies did. You know, making unwanted hat/scarf/mitten sets and reindeer sweaters for their grandkids. And although I'm sure that exists out there, to have lumped ALL knitters into that category was completely wrong. I have been so inspired by knitwear designers and so impressed at how modern and fitted patterns have become just in the short time I've been knitting. I think Ravelry really opened up the floodgates to let people share their talent and showcase their skills.
Below is something I've been working on for my mom. The pattern is the "Eyelet Cowl" from Cathy Carron's Cowl Girls book. I've modified it quite a bit to make it a bit wider and am using 12 different color-coordinated yarns from Coloratura's Giant Skein in "Brick." So far it's been an easy knit, but I can't say that I'm super excited to have to knit in all of those strands for the new yarn additions. Hoping to have this all finished tomorrow.
For tonight, it's off to pizza and a movie with my best friend and my four-year-old godson. Happy knitting to you all.
